Books of the Ateshi World

The books of the Ateshi world explore a civilisation shaped by the belief that the Divine is present in bodies, relationships and public life—and by institutions that do not always survive their own ideals.

The series begins with The Ashen Flame, a novel of investigation, family memory and religious power by Alexei Sassani. Future titles and short fiction will share the same world without requiring readers to study an encyclopaedia before opening the story.

Fiction notice: Ateshism and the Ateshi world are invented. The books use real geographical names within an alternate history, but they do not describe a real religion or historical civilisation.

The Ashen Flame

Khorasan, spring 2010. Ash Mother Farah Kianzad receives a referral concerning Anousheh, one of Ateshism’s most revered modern Rose Mothers.

The allegation is not that Anousheh loved too many people. Ateshi law recognises temporary marriage, and eleven relationships are not themselves a crime or scandal. The problem lies in the overlap: pastoral counsel, housing, appointments and professional influence appear in some of the same files.

Farah must determine where care ended, authority began and a civilisation’s admiration made the difference impossible to record.

What kind of novel is it?

The Ashen Flame combines:

• literary fantasy grounded in character and social consequence;
• alternate history using Persia, Khorasan and Central Asian geography;
• institutional investigation based on records, testimony and conflicting interpretations;
• family drama shaped by love, consent and unequal status;
• theology treated as a living intellectual system rather than decorative lore.

The novel’s central mystery is moral and evidential. It does not ask only what happened. It asks whether an institution can identify coercion when nobody behaved like a simple villain, and whether genuine good can coexist with unexamined power.

Do I need to read the website first?

No. The novel introduces its own world through Farah’s life and work. Ateshism.com is a companion archive for readers who want to go deeper.
